Tell us about yourself

Hi, I’m Deborah! I’m from Cavan and have been living in Dublin for college for the last 3 years. I am currently in 3rd year studying Primary Teaching at DCU. My specialism subject and a subject I have always had a great love for is maths, which is also one of the main reasons this internship appealed to me

Why did you apply for the STInt Programme?

I applied for this programme as I felt that it is an excellent opportunity to improve my knowledge and skills in the area of STEM and get a deeper insight in what is involved in it. I also wanted to change the negative stigma that can sometimes be associated with these subjects in school, particularly for girls. By doing this it will give me more confidence and knowledge to inspire my students to go into STEM careers.

Where are you doing your ‘STInt’ in industry?

I’m delighted to have accepted a role at SSE Airtricity for summer 2021. SSE are a company who provide 100% green electricity, natural gas and essential services to homes and businesses across Ireland. My internship will most likely be done remotely but may move to a hybrid style of working later in the summer – I’d love to go on site and see what it’s like and how SSE manage different wind farms around Ireland. I hope to improve my knowledge on renewable energy, on it’s benefits and how it can be implemented on a smaller scale in areas such as schools.
