Tell us about yourself

Hello, My name is Laura. I’m in my 3rd year studying physical education with mathematics in Dublin City University. I’m really enjoying my course and availing of the amazing opportunities that comes with it in DCU.

Why did you apply for the STInt Programme?

I’m an ambitious, self motivated person who is constantly looking for new ways to experience self growth. I’m eager to gain industry experience working with a team of professionals striving to achieve a common goal. I hope to learn from this model and incorporate appropriate elements into my classroom. I have thoroughly enjoyed the mathematical aspects of my course so far and am now keen to first handedly see and understand the application of mathematics in a large company before I go on to teach the subject. I strive to improve myself as not only a teacher but as a person. It is through this experience that I believe I will become a better rounded individual, with a wider skillset and a greater depth of knowledge which I will undoubtedly utilise.

Where are you doing your ‘STInt’ in industry?

I’m thrilled to have accepted a role at IBM for summer 2021. IBM Global Business Services is a team of business, strategy and technology consultants that design, build, and run foundational systems and services that is the backbone of the world’s economy.

During my time in IBM I will be working closely with the P-TECH team. P–TECH is a public-education model that provides high school students from underserved backgrounds with the academic, technical, and professional skills and credentials they need for competitive STEM jobs. Part of my role here will be to create resources to empower the P-TECH students with information they need to live active, happy and healthy lives. I’m excited to combine my love for promoting physical activity and health with my teaching and mathematics skills with the hope of contributing to P-TECH’s mission.
